MAC: Pro Longwear Lip Creme Collection

Jul 16 2010 | Categories: Lipgloss | Reviews & Makeup Tips, Lipstick, MAC Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics for Lips, MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Collections, MAC Cosmetics Lipsticks, MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lip Creme, MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lipcolour

Release Date: September 16, 2010

It’s an age-old dilemma that still doesn’t seem to have a good solution: How can you get your lipstick to stay put while eating? Cosmetics companies come out with long wearing lipsticks from time to time but most of these leave your lips dry and an unsightly ring of color around your lips. MAC addresses this problem head-on with their new Pro Longwear Lip Creme Collection.

As the name implies, these lipsticks are very creamy. They come in a wind-up tube that is similar to MAC’s lipstick packaging but taller and narrower. The consistency of these lip cremes is actually closer to a balm and they do a decent job of keeping lips hydrated.

One of the best things about these lipsticks is that they don’t require a special top coat like most long-wearing lipsticks. This means application is a snap, although you should probably use a mirror since the color is so pigmented that it’s not very forgiving. They do deliver on their promise to stay in place for up to twelve hours but don’t tempt fate by eating an oily pasta sauce. The colors go on pretty evenly and they have a subtle sheen to them. These lip cremes will be part of the permanent collection so MAC is placing a lot of confidence in this product. Don’t expect it to be just a passing trend.

Fading lipstick is a particular problem with bright and dark colors so MAC made sure to include several of these shades in the collection. Good to Go is a bold bright orange shade that is not for the faint of heart. Love Forever! is a daring bright pink with blue undertones. The dark brick red Extended Play is a great shade for fall. Prolong is a ruby red shade that is destined to become a classic for those who can pull off red lips. These are mostly cream formulas but there are also two frosty shades: the coppery Sweet Ever After and the nude/plum Made to Last. All of the colors provide full coverage.

A Beginner’s Overview of MAC Eyeliners

Jun 11 2010 | Categories: Eye Makeup, MAC Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics Eye Liners, MAC Cosmetics Eye Pencil, MAC Cosmetics Fluidline, MAC Cosmetics for Eyes, MAC Cosmetics Glitter Eye Liner, MAC Cosmetics Kohl Power Eye Pencil, MAC Cosmetics Liquid Eye Liner, MAC Cosmetics Liquidlast Liner, MAC Cosmetics Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner, MAC Cosmetics Penultimate Eyeliner, MAC Cosmetics Powerpoint Eye Pencil, MAC Cosmetics Softsparkle Eye Pencil, MAC Cosmetics Technakohl Liner, MAC Cosmetics-Eye Kohl

No matter what type of eyeliner you prefer, you can probably find the perfect formula and color somewhere in MAC’s extensive eyeliner range. From traditional liner pencils to kohl pencils, liquid liners, and gels, no one can walk away from a MAC counter and honestly say they couldn’t find a liner they liked.

Pencil wearers can choose from traditional Pencil Liners, soft Eye Kohl pencils and their more intense cousins the Kohl Power Eye Pencils, the mechanical pencil-style Technakohl Liner, and the long lasting cult favorite Powerpoint Eye Pencils. The Powerpoints are absolutely budge-proof. Permaplum is a very rich metallic purple that is dark enough to look natural. It also has a pink shimmer but don’t be put off by that. It’s not noticeable but instead has the effect of making the liner look multi-dimensional.

For those who never have any luck with pencils, there are a number of liquid options. Liquid Eye Liner is a standard liquid liner whereas Penultimate Eye Liner is a liquid liner with a pen tip. MAC’s Liquidlast Liner is a very long-wearing liquid liner with a brush applicator that stays on even through a day at the beach or after some serious crying. Not only does it not run, it also doesn’t flake, which is pretty impressive for a liquid liner. In fact, when it’s time to remove it, plan on expending an extra effort with a waterproof eye makeup remover. It comes in a lot of fun colors that can be hard to find in liquid liners, such as the teal-colored Aqualine.

MAC Fluidline

Fluidlines are the best of both worlds. They are gel liners that look soft and smooth like a pencil but without the hassle of sharpening. The Fluidlines do not smudge and come in cute little glass pots. You have a lot of control over the application because you can use whatever brush you want depending on the desired outcome. Blitz & Glitz is a classic black with a golden pearl twist. It seems almost impossible to go through an entire pot, but be sure to cap the lid tightly to avoid drying out the gel.

With so many great options, the only problem you will have when buying a MAC Eyeliner is narrowing down your selection!

Benefit Cosmetics: High Beam Highlighter

May 25 2010 | Categories: Benefit Cosmetics, Makeup Tips for Face, Skin Care

When it comes to getting fresh glowing skin, Benefit High Beam can’t be beat. This liquid highlighter from Benefit is one of the most popular highlighters on the market for a good reason. There are many highlighters out there and most of them are duds. It’s a product that’s hard to get right. Instead of a youthful glow, many highlighters give a greasy shine. Others have noticeable chunks of glitter that look ridiculous in sunlight. Even the ones that do look alright tend to clog pores. Benefit got the formula right when it created High Beam. This is definitely one of our top Benefit makeup picks.

High Beam comes in a small bottle with a brush attached to the lid, similar to the packaging of nail polish. However, it is easier to apply it with your fingertips as that gives you more control over where you apply it and makes blending easier. For the most natural look, dab the brush onto your fingertips and then dot the product onto your cheeks, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose and then blend it in an outward circular motion using your fingertips. It is fairly long lasting which means you won’t need to touch it up during the day. However, it is easy enough to tuck the bottle into your purse just in case.

In the bottle, the liquid looks a bit on the pink side but when applied, it makes your whole face look brighter without any trace of pink. The color works even on the palest of skin tones. The popularity of High Beam has also led to the creation of a warmer-toned version, Moon Beam, which looks particularly nice with a deep tan.

Benefit’s High Beam is a great way to get radiant skin without looking shimmery or oily. It is subtle enough to wear during the day, but it’s easy to get a dramatic look by applying it with a heavy hand for a night out. Like other Benefit Cosmetics products, it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin or clog pores. Overall, this is a well-rounded highlighter that really delivers on its promises. Just a small amount of product can totally transform your face from dull and tired to bright, awake, and glowing.

Estee Lauder to Purchase Smashbox

May 17 2010 | Categories: Aveda, Beauty News, Clinique Skincare & Cosmetics, Estee Lauder Skincare & Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics, Origins Cosmetics, Smashbox Cosmetics

After an announcement yesterday, Estee Lauder has confirmed their intentions for Smashbox to become part of the Estee Lauder family. Estee Lauder already owns several popular brands including MAC Cosmetics, Aveda, Origins, Bumble and Bumble, Prescriptives and Clinique as well as their own cosmetics brand. Estee Lauder will purchase Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics Inc. in a deal that is expected to close sometime around July. Their intentions with the deal are to attract a broader base of younger, more modern customers. Estee Lauder believes they have the expertise to help the brand reach its full sales potential. When the company purchase the MAC Cosmetics brand in 1998, it had sales of about $100 million. It has now become an over $1 billion business and Estee Lauder hopes to have the same monetary success will the Smashbox brand.

Pout Cosmetics Review and Recommendations

May 11 2010 | Categories: Pout Cosmetics

Pout Cosmetics is a boutique makeup line that emphasizes fun. With cute packaging, clever product names, and a very relaxed sales approach, Pout is one of the least intimidating makeup companies around. Pout came onto the scene in 2001 and quickly gained popularity. Although Pout has since closed up shop, it still has a cult following and Pout products can still be found through various outlets online.

Pout first became famous for its lip gloss, thanks in part to Kylie Minogue. After she wore their lip gloss in her music video for “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, everyone wanted to know what she was wearing and where to buy it. This helped draw attention to the line as it was first taking off. The shade she wore, Pop My Bubble, is one of their most popular. It’s a medium bubblegum pink color full of shine that makes lips look fuller. Bite My Cherry is another great shade in their lip gloss line. It’s a cherry red color that fades beautifully to become more of a rose shade on the lips. Their lip glosses are packed with shine and are also moisturizing. They are a bit sticky in texture, so if you’re not a fan of sticky lip glosses, this is one to avoid. However, the stickiness does help the lip gloss to last longer.

Le Pout.

Pout also has a winner with its Flush Blush. One frustrating thing about blush is that it tends to fade quickly but this powder blush is highly pigmented and wears beautifully. Apricot Totty is a vibrant coral shade that leans more toward orange. It brightens up lighter skin tones when applied lightly with a skunk brush. For those who shy away from orange blushes, Blossom Belle is a peach blush with just a touch of pink and a bit of golden shimmer to help warm up the face.

Pout’s mascara is also worth checking out. It is not heavy or thick like most mascaras, and it doesn’t do a great job of thickening. Instead, the formula is fairly watery which means it looks pretty natural on the lashes. It’s particularly suited to those with full, short lashes because it lengthens without clumping. The brush is very thin and small so it is easy to get mascara onto corner lashes without applying too much.

Pout is not only cute and clever, it also has some standout products. It’s definitely worth trying to track down a Pout lip gloss, blush, or mascara to experience some of the fun for yourself.

MAC: Dare to Wear Collection

Apr 29 2010 | Categories: MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow, MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Collections, MAC Cosmetics Lipglass

Release Date: July 29th, 2010
August 2010 (International)

MAC Cosmetics Dare to Wear Collection

Join the brigade of loud-and-proud who daily dare to declare their own individuality. High-powered pigment and holographic pearl create a crazy-intense, shine-saturated gloss, combined with eye shadow shades as over-the-top as Lady G live! Not afraid to DARE TO WEAR? Bravo!

Dare to Wear is a fun new collection from MAC for early fall 2010. As the name implies, this collection features a lot of bright, bold colors. However, even the more conservative MAC fans can find a few shades they will feel comfortable wearing so it’s something everyone should check out.

Dare to Wear is pretty straightforward as far as MAC releases go in the sense that it consists only of eyeshadows and lipglasses. Most of the eyeshadows are matte shades with a heavy emphasis on blues and greens. Brown-eyed girls in particular can pull off these colors with ease. One of the loudest colors, the bright blue Zingy, is a limited release that is sure to make a statement. Those looking for a safer blue might want to check out Aqua Subdued, which is a softer turquoise color with enough gray mixed in to help tone down the brightness. MAC has also resurrected the popular Going Bananas shadow from the C-shock collection. This frosty canary yellow shade is surprisingly subtle on the eyes and looks great paired with the Rubenesque Paint Pot.

The Dare to Wear Lipglasses are perfect for days when you want to make a statement with your lips. Ban This! is a pearly true violet shade that is certainly bright but the more adventurous cool-toned girls out there will be able to pull it off, especially when paired with a black or navy blue eye look. So Bad is another vibrant shade but this is one of the more wearable colors in the collection. It’s a straight up coral with gold pearl that looks great on its own but could also be worn with a neutral shade underneath for a more natural look. Dare to Wear is a great way to say goodbye to summer makeup colors before fall sets in.

MAC: Alice + Olivia Collection

Apr 24 2010 | Categories: MAC Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics Dazzleglass Creme, MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Collections, MAC Cosmetics Nail Lacquer, MAC Cosmetics Pigment

Release Date: July 8th, 2010
International: August 2010 (Japan and Korea only)

Alice + Olivia is a small but fun collection inspired by the fashion line of the same name. This is not one of those collections that is so dizzyingly large that you don’t know where to begin. Instead it consists of a few carefully selected items that are easy to get to know and equally easy to love.

Pigment lovers will rejoice in the three new shades that are coming out with Alice + Olivia. Later is unlike any other pigment MAC has come out with so far- a black with purple shimmer that is perfect as a crease color or wet as a liner. Partylicious is another color that can’t be matched by any pigment you already own. This one is turquoise with silver shimmer. If It Sparkles is a bit more familiar. This white with pink pearl shade immediately calls to mind Pink Opal Pigment.

Dazzleglass Cremes are back with three shades that are worth a closer look. If It’s Pink is a pearly hot pink that is sure to get noticed. Sparklicious is a pearly milky pink shade that is subtle yet different enough to warrant purchasing as it would look great on top of many different lipstick colors. I.Want.Candy is a pearly yellow but don’t let its yellow appearance scare you off. It’s actually prettier and more subdued on the lips, much in the same way that Spring Bean Lustreglass was anything but green once applied.

The three Nail Lacquers in Alice + Olivia are nothing like traditional nail polish colors. If you never stray from red or pink polish, you probably won’t give these a second look. And that would be a very big mistake. The shimmery bright purple So Rich So Pretty is unconventional without being gaudy. Morning. After is a turquoise polish that is neither too blue nor too green, making it a great starting point for someone who wants to step outside their comfort zone. For the really adventurous, there is the silvery-black Military polish.

Alice + Olivia is full of great colors that push the limits but are still fairly easy to pull off. Don’t judge these shades by how they look in the containers. Give them a try at your MAC counter and you will probably be very pleasantly surprised.

Basic Tips for a Natural Eye Makeup Look

A natural eye makeup look is an important one to master. Many occasions call for subtle or natural looking makeup, from conservative business settings to an early morning dentist appointment. You want to look put together but don’t want it to be too obvious you are wearing makeup. Here are a few tips for giving your eyes some definition without looking like you tried too hard.

-Start with a base to neutralize any redness you may have in the eye area and to help your color last all day without creasing. Eye makeup products like MAC Bare Canvas Paint or Too Faced Shadow Insurance are perfect for prepping your lid for a neutral look.

-Swipe a soft neutral shade all over the lid. You can go with a beige, peach, or bone color depending on your skin tone. Matte shades or slightly shimmery ones such as MAC Grain are ideal choices.

-Apply a taupe or brown color in your crease using a rounded crease brush. Avoid red-based browns. A color like MAC Satin Taupe is flattering to most skin tones. After applying, use a blending brush to blend as much as possible so the color fades gradually.

-Use a pencil eye liner in a medium brown color. A soft pencil in a color similar to your lashes like Urban Decay Bourbon or MAC Teddy Eye Kohl gives you the most natural look. A gel liner like the soft shimmery brown MAC Ostentatious applied with a light hand can also look pretty and natural. Liquid liners should be avoided altogether.

-Curl your lashes and then apply one coat of mascara to the upper lashes only. Go with a brown mascara or dark brown if your hair is very dark. Black can look too harsh for natural makeup looks.

-Be sure to fill in your brows. This is an essential step for making your face look complete. Use a powder or soft pencil in a shade that is just slightly lighter than your natural brow color. Follow your natural arch and fill in the brows, being sure to blend well.

-A brow highlighter helps round out your look. A neutral shadow such as MAC Vanilla applied to the brow bone just under the brows adds a little highlight/definition without adding color.

It is very easy to get a natural eye makeup look with the right makeup products and a little bit of practice. After a few tries, achieving this look will become just as effortless as it appears!

Senna Foundation

Apr 21 2010 | Categories: Makeup Tips for Face, Mineral Makeup | Reviews & Makeup Tips, Senna Cosmetics

Senna Cosmetics is an indie beauty brand that brings the expertise of a pro makeup artist with experience working in film and television right to your makeup drawer! For a great look, you need to have a smooth, clean-looking canvas to work with. That’s why it’s so important to find a great foundation, or base product; Senna foundations offer many different options with different finishes for your optimal “perfect canvas.”

The mineral makeup trend is still going strong as women seek a lighter, more natural, and breathable way to cover up skin imperfections. Senna offers several different mineral based foundations. Pressed Mineral Mix foundation provides buildable coverage with all the benefits of mineral makeup, but with less mess. It’s easily portable and comes in six shades. Mineral Mix Cover and Finish foundation is loose, contains no common irritants such as dyes or waxes, provides sun protection, and provides complete coverage—even for extreme redness, such as that related to rosacea. In the lid of the Cover and Finish is a pressed powder in a slightly darker shade that can be used for bronzer, contouring, or just as your skin changes color slightly.

Too often, oil-free foundations are also full-coverage foundations. Senna foundation is lightweight and buildable, eliminating the chance of a mask-like finish. The Senna Matte Finish Liquid Makeup is water based and oil-free, and builds to your desired level of coverage. It has options for both warm and cool skin tones in a total of 15 shades.

Slipcover Cream-To-Powder foundation offers a creamy base without any oily additives, and works equally well on oily and dry skins. Moist Matte is a compact foundation that can be used wet for full coverage, or dry for sheer coverage.

Each of the Senna foundation formulas has something to offer everyone in terms of coverage, color, and finish.

MAC: Digi-Dazzle Collection

Apr 15 2010 | Categories: MAC Cosmetics Dazzleglass, MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Collections

Release Date: July 15, 2010 (Nordstrom and The Bay)

Nordstrom’s Anniversary Collection

MAC Cosmetics Digi-Dazzle Collection

We took out the razzle, kept the dazzle, and added a hint of glee! Thirteen colours to astonish, awe and electrify the lippiest critic. A limited-edition collection that makes boredom and predictability a thing of the past. What modern lips do best: Digi-Dazzle. Do you compute?

Digi Dazzle Brush Browser

The MAC Digi Pops Brush Browser collection is made up of two well-rounded brush kits that put some of MAC’s past brush kits to shame. These kits feature a few of MAC’s most useful brushes beautifully packaged in a black MAC brush roll with white details. MAC brushes have a great reputation thanks to their high quality bristles and great design, but they do command a high price tag. These Brush Browser sets are a great way to get a few MAC brushes at a slightly lower price. After all, a good set of brushes can make even the cheapest makeup look fantastic.

4 Face Brushes Apply + Blend set contains four of MAC’s top face brushes with special edition shorter handles for easier transport and storage. Perhaps one of the most indispensable brushes in any collection is the concealer brush since concealer is generally applied to very small areas. The 194SE concealer brush in this set is the perfect brush for precise concealer application thanks to its tapered bristles. The 168SE is a large angled contour brush that is mainly designed for contouring but it’s also great for applying blush, bronzer, and highlighter. MAC’s stippling brush, the 187SE, is also included. This is a very soft brush that is ideal for applying heavily pigmented blushes. This kit also has a brush specifically designed for foundation, the 190SE. This is MAC’s traditional foundation brush that is very durable and designed to distribute foundation evenly without streaking.

5 Eye Brushes Apply, Define, + Line puts all the tools needed to create any eye look imaginable together in one place. Among the best brushes in this kit are the 212 flat eyeliner brush which creates a very precise line and the 266 small angle brush that gives gel eyeliner and brow powder applications a professional look.

The Brush Browser sets are a convenient way to snap up some of MAC’s best brushes whether you are just starting out with good brushes or looking for backups or replacements. MAC brushes have a stellar reputation among makeup artists and these kits put their brushes in the reach of even those of us who can’t use makeup brushes as a tax write-off.

Digi Dazzle Lip Server

MAC Digi Pops Lip Server is the collection frosty lip lovers have been waiting for. Lip Server is chock full of frosty lipsticks and lip glosses to help give your lips a shimmery effect. Even better, the colors are suitable for any season.

The frost in the new Dazzle lipsticks in Lip Server is more multidimensional than the frost in traditional lipsticks which makes the lips appear slightly fuller. Many frosty lipsticks tend to dry out the lips but these are actually quite moisturizing. MAC has succeeded in offering a good variety of lip colors in Lip Server from baby pinks and neutrals to deep reds and browns. Pink lipstick fans will flock toward Troublemaker, a berry pink that instantly brightens the face. Baby’s on Fire is the color of choice for red lipstick wearers. Frosty deep reds can look over the top but MAC got the balance right with this shimmery brick red shade. It definitely stands on its own and doesn’t need any lip gloss on top. Hot Sass makes you stop and take a closer look, which is something that doesn’t happen often when it comes to lipstick shades. At first glance, it’s very orange, but then the flash of pink jumps out at you and makes you think, “I might be able to get away with that color! I wonder how it looks on me…” It’s something really different that may surprise you after trying it on.

No lipstick collection would be complete without lip glosses to polish off the look. Digi Pops serves up seven Dazzleglasses and they’re all limited editions. You may already be familiar with the repromoted raspberry Spanking Rich and the orange Utterly Posh, but there are a few new shades worth nothing. Spanking Rich is a shimmery magenta with a hint of glitter that is great for medium skin tones. Hi-Falutin’ perks up a boring neutral pink (think 2N gloss from the N collection) with subtle shimmer.

Digi Dazzle iPalette

The Digi Pops iPalette collection offers MAC fans a chance to create their own palettes. One problem many eye shadow aficionados face is a drawer full of eye shadow pots that can be difficult to sort through and find colors that go together. MAC offers the perfect solution to this quandary with Digipops iPalette.

With this collection, MAC has pulled out a number of permanent eye shadow shades in the pan for easy palette placement. The fun part is choosing which colors to put together in your palette. If you’re not sure which colors pair well, MAC makeup artists will be happy to advise you on flattering combinations. There are plenty of shades to choose from including some of MAC’s most popular colors.

Retrospeck is a slightly shimmery champagne shade that is perfect for an everyday lid wash and looks especially nice with browns. Expensive Pink is a golden pink that is perfect for the lids or highlighting the outer V. Satin Taupe is one of those universally flattering crease colors that would be at home in any palette. It’s the perfect blend of grey and brown that makes it suitable for creating smoky nighttime eye looks and neutral work day eyes as well. It is versatile enough to be paired with browns, purples, greens, golds, and even pinks. If you want to add some color to your lids, Parfair Amour is a great blue-based purple that is flattering to every eye color and not nearly as bright when applied as it looks in the pan.

Digipops iPalette lets you create your own eye look and have all of your shadows together in one place . You can just pull out your palette and apply the colors without having to think too hard about what goes together or rifling through your makeup drawer to find the right shade.

Eyeshadow is a great way to emphasize your eyes and create some really pretty looks. Most shadows come in powder format in little pots without any instructions. With so many different colors and brushes, it can be difficult to know where to start when applying eyeshadow. Since this “how-to” is part of our beginner’s How to Apply Makeup series, this is a basic routine for an everyday eyeshadow look. We have instructions on more advanced looks on our eye makeup page.

1. You will need a minimum of three colors to achieve a pretty eyeshadow look. Choose three shades in the same color family: one very sheer, one with a medium tone, and one dark color.

MAC Neutrals
Creative Commons License photo credit: Jacklyn DL

2. Begin with the sheer shade. This will be used as a wash over the entire eyelid. Neutrals are best for this purpose. Sweep the color over the entire eyelid all the way to your brows using a flat eyeshadow brush.

3. Next use the medium shade. Apply it only to the lid using a tapered brush and stop when you reach the crease. This color should fill the space between your lash line and the crease.

4. Finally, use the darkest color. This color should be applied sparingly. Remember, you can always add more but if you start out with too much, your look will be ruined. Using an angled brush, apply this color into the crease and then extend it slightly past the outer corner of your eye using a light sweeping motion.

5. Blend, blend, and blend some more. This is the most important step to achieving a natural look. Use a big, soft blending brush and brush in an outward motion from the inside corner toward the outside corner of each eye.

6. To tie the whole look together, you can take the darkest color and use it to line your lower lash line. A wet eyeliner brush can transform dark eyeshadow into a great eyeliner.
