Eye Makeup

Your eye makeup is perhaps the most important part of your overall look. Eyes get attention, draw people in, and communicate a great deal about you before you say a word. But, if done poorly, eye makeup can be the first clue that you are wearing too much makeup, or are simply trying too hard. The trick is knowing when and where to use different eye makeup looks.

Generally, you will only want to play up one main facial feature at a time. So if you’re planning on doing a more elaborate eye makeup look, you will want a neutral, or lighter lip color. If you’re planning on drawing attention to your lips, use a more natural, toned-down eye makeup look. Here are a few top looks that every fashionista should master: the smokey eye makeup look, the cat eye makeup look, the natural or no makeup look.

Our eye makeup tips and tutorials can help you find just the right look for any occasion:

MAC: False Lashes Mascara Collection

Nov 07 2010 | Categories: Eye Makeup, MAC Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics False Lashes Mascara, MAC Cosmetics for Eyes, MAC Cosmetics Limited Edition Collections, MAC Cosmetics Mascaras, Mascara | Reviews & Makeup Tips

Release Date: December 26, 2010

False Lashes Mascara adds dramatic volume, the rich, creamy, volumizing formula magnifies and multiplies the look of each lash, creating dramatically thick, long, curled, exaggerated lashes. The lush brush applies a deluxe dose of heavy pigment to the lashes and works in combination with the product to create incredible volume, length and density. The pigments in the formula are treated to allow for maximum colour payoff that remains true, deep, uniform and wears all day long. It’s flake- and smudge-resistant, ophth-tested and safe for contact wearers.

The MAC False Lashes Mascara collection marks the release of the latest in a string of new mascaras released by MAC. Despite all the success MAC Cosmetics has had in the realm of lip and eye products, they are still chasing that elusive wonder formula that will truly put their name on the mascara road map. MAC’s mascara history is mostly full of misses, although their most recent effort, Opulash, showed some big steps in the right direction.

With False Lashes mascara, it looks like MAC is continuing an upward trend when it comes to mascara. This mascara aims to give you the look of false lashes without the hassle of applying them and keeping them in place. It boasts the typical mascara claims- namely fuller and longer lashes. A special formula and brush are designed to work together to give the illusion of lashes that are so thick and long they almost seem fake.

One good thing about False Lashes mascara is that it doesn’t dry out your lashes the way lots of lengthening mascaras can. Despite its creamy texture, it manages to stay put all day. The brush is similar to the Opulash brush which was specially engineered to deliver mascara to each lash. The brush may take some getting used to at first but it actually does a great job of delivering mascara to your lashes.

As usual, MAC has put a lot of effort into engineering this mascara. It has been tested by ophthalmologists and it’s safe for contact lens wearers. Best of all, it doesn’t flake, which means no annoying pieces of mascara falling into your eyes. It’s not drying or irritating, which is a big plus.

So far it’s only available in black but if this formula really takes off, we might be lucky enough to see some fun shades of purple, blue, and green. The black version is highly pigmented, which adds to the effect of full, thick lashes. It’s a great starting point and definitely one of MAC’s better mascaras so hopefully they will branch out and expand their False Lashes Mascara range beyond just the basic black.

How to De-Pot MAC Eyeshadows and Blushes

Oct 22 2010 | Categories: Blush, Eye Makeup, Featured Posts, MAC Cosmetics, MAC Cosmetics Beauty Powder Blush, MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow, MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow Palettes, MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadow Quads, MAC Cosmetics Eyeshadows, MAC Cosmetics Powder Blush, Makeup for Cheeks, Makeup Tutorials

Many people prefer having an eyeshadow palette so they can see all their shadows at once and keep them organized and in one place. Depotting MAC eyeshadows will allow you to create your own customized eyeshadow palette. Even better, you can return the empty shadow pots to MAC to get a free lipstick once you accumulate six of them under their Back to MAC recycling program. The same de-potting process can also be used on MAC powder blushes.

Taking the shadow pans out of the black pots that case them can be a bit tricky at first, but it’s quite simple once you get the hang of it. The hardest part is not breaking or shattering the shadow itself, but this is easy enough to avoid if you work slowly with a soft towel underneath to cushion any accidental falls. There are many different methods to depot MAC Cosmetics shadows. Many people use a flame to melt the plastic on the bottom of the pot but this can be downright dangerous. Some people use an iron, which is an improvement on the flame method. However, I find that the easiest and least risky method is using a hair straightening iron.

To get started, you only need a few items that most people already have on hand. You will need a sharp knife, a bit of wax paper, a soft towel, and a flat iron. You can use any type of flat iron as long as the plates are flat. Finally, if you are super organized, you might want to get some round sticky labels so you can label your shadows. The ¾ inch size works well on MAC shadow pans.

1. Lay the towel down on your working space to avoid any eyeshadow breakage disasters.

2. Open up the shadow pot and look for the line near the clasp where the shroud for the pan sits in the pot. Insert the knife into this line and gently wiggle it back and forth until you are able to pop out the shroud. You may be surprised at how easily the shroud pops out so work over the towel just in case! Set the pot aside and use it for Back to MAC.

3. Turn on your flat iron and rest it on one side, so that one of the plates is facing up and the other is facing down. Cut a piece of wax paper about four inches by four inches and place it on the plate that is facing up.

4. Set the shroud on top of the waxed paper, ensuring that it is positioned over the plate of the flat iron. You should leave it on top of there for several minutes so the heat can melt the bottom of the shroud and the glue a bit. How long this takes depends on your iron, but around five minutes should do the trick. Carefully check the bottom of the shroud and look for an indent in the middle. This signifies that it’s ready for the next step.

5. Stick your knife into the melted indent on the bottom of the shroud and push up gently. The plastic should be soft and the knife should slide right in. The pan should lift out easily. If not, let it cook a little more on the flat iron. You don’t want to push it out all the way- just lift it out a little.

6. Turn the shroud over and place the blade of your knife underneath the pan. Use the blade to lift the pan out and set it on the towel to cool. The metal of the pan will be extremely hot so don’t touch it! Once it cools, it’s ready to be placed into your palette. You can use cotton swabs dipped in alcohol to remove any extra glue that remains stuck to the pan. You can also attach a magnet or sticker if desired.

Now you’re all set to create your own custom MAC eyeshadow palettes!

How to Get Longer Eyelashes

Sep 20 2010 | Categories: Beauty Tips, Eye Makeup, Mascara | Reviews & Makeup Tips

Want longer eyelashes? Join the club. There are a few different options you will want to consider.

Most women simply wear a lengthening formula of mascara to give the appearance of longer eyelashes. Others even opt to get their eyelashes tinted if they have blonde or lighter eyelashes.

Some of the more noticeable options include getting actual lash extensions applied by an aesthetician or getting a prescription for a pharmaceutical drug that actually promotes eyelash growth in a matter of a few weeks. Read on for more details:

Applied Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions have come a long way over the past decade. Unlike the fake lashes of yesterday, which had to be applied with a stick on glue, today’s eyelash extensions range from extensions that are semi-permanent and applied lash by lash by a trained technician.

Creative Commons License photo credit: Navy Blue StripesIf you’re heading to your favorite salon to have eyelash extensions applied, make sure the person applying them is trained and licensed. There’s a technique to applying extensions that look naturally thick and full, and it takes training to know how to properly apply eyelashes to achieve that natural look and last for a month or more.

Eyelash extensions are available in a variety of colors, thickness and lengths and a consultation with your stylist should determine the right combination for your eye color and shape. Some colors are uniquely designed to match or enhance the color of your eyes including beautiful hints of blues, violets, greens and purple. People cannot tell the difference between your lashes and extensions, because these synthetically applied extensions blend evenly with your natural lashes. On close examination, you can actually see what looks like roots. How natural is that?

Applying eyelash extensions by a licensed technician takes about an hour and a half, because approximately 30 or more eyelashes are bonded individually in various lengths to enhance your natural lashes. Prices for extension lashes run approximately $250 to $500. Lash fills (the touch up appointments you’ll have every three to four weeks after you get your initial lashes done) are much more affordable, ranging from about $20 to $60 depending upon which salon you visit.

Eyelash Extension Drug

New to the market, a pharmaceutical drug for those who are looking for longer lashes is becoming a popular solution. FDA approved LATISSE is fast becoming the eyelash extension of choice for women looking to speed up or replace eyelashes that are thinning or limp. It is also a fantastic solution for those women who may be undergoing chemotherapy and lost their lashes or women who have damaged tissue around the eyelid. This prescription is a gel, which is applied daily on the eyelids with the expectation that you will see results in about eight weeks. Lashes will grow for four months or so, and are then maintained with further applications. The topical gel is applied to the upper eyelid only and is only applied once a day. If you notice any side effects like redness or swelling, you should stop use and contact your physician. Treatments are sold in kits at about $120 per kit.

If you want to get longer eyelashes, you have plenty of options. Many salons offer free consultations. If you’re not sure which direction to go, find a salon you trust and go in for an appointment to determine which lash option is right for you.

Kiss and Make Up…

“Kiss and make up – but too much makeup has ruined many a kiss.” – Mae West

Have You Tried: MAC Powerpoint Eye Pencil in Permaplum?

MAC Powerpoint Eyeliner in Permaplum is a very versatile shade that is perfect for everyday use. When you wake up in the morning and want to throw on some makeup quickly without thinking about coordination, it is a very safe bet because it goes with almost everything and will last all day.

Permaplum is a dark purple shade with a very subtle hint of pink shimmer. The shimmer is so subtle that you probably won’t even notice it. It is just enough to make the color look a bit more “awake” rather than flat and dull but not enough to see the individual shimmer particles. The purple is so dark that it can almost pass for black, which means it goes with almost everything. Permaplum has just enough purple in it to help green, hazel, and brown eye colors stand out.

Like all of the MAC Powerpoint eyeliner, Permaplum has excellent staying power. Pencils tend to wear off throughout the day, but the Powerpoints stay in place all day with only minimal smudging. It does not last through swimming as well as the Liquidlast liners do but it is perfect for a long day at work. It is also very easy to apply on the go so you can bring it in your bag and touch it up in even the tiniest bathroom mirrors to take your look from day into night.

To get the best look with a Powerpoint eye pencil, begin with a very sharp tip and apply to the top lash lines first. This gives you the most control over the thickness of the line. You can get a deeper color by going over the outer third of the line twice with the pencil. After applying the liner to the top of the lids, the point will have softened a little. This leaves it in the perfect condition for giving the lower lash line a softer look. One very light swipe across the bottom lash line, working from the outside corner to the inside, is enough to define the eyes. If it looks too heavy, a quick trace with a cotton swab will help smudge it a bit. You need to make a decision about smudging quickly though. You only have a few seconds before the liner sets and then it will be much more difficult (although not impossible) to smudge nicely.

MAC’s Permaplum liner scores high points all around. It’s a great color that is flattering but not too daring. For ease of application, portability, lasting power, and economy, it is an excellent choice. It’s easy to throw it on even when you’re half-awake and you don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day.

All About Eyelash Tinting

Have you ever wished you could dye your eyelashes the same way you dye your hair? Are you tired of applying mascara day after day and then removing it before bed? If so, eyelash tinting could be something you want to look into.

Eyelash tinting is a procedure that is very similar to coloring your hair. A tint is applied to the lashes that leaves them looking darker and more noticeable. This can make a really big difference for girls with lighter-colored lashes in particular. On the other hand, if your lashes are already black, it isn’t really necessary to get them tinted and if you do, your results may not be very noticeable depending on your lash type and the color used.

There are a few different colors available that range from very natural brown colors that look great on blondes to very dark black that helps deepen the tone of naturally black lashes and makes them appear glossier. There are also black shades that have a hint of blue or purple for a fun twist.

The entire procedure of eyelash tinting takes around fifteen minutes and is usually performed in a salon. A special cream is applied to prevent the tint from soaking into your skin. Cotton pads typically go over top of the cream, and then your eyelashes rest on the pads as the tint dries. As the dye is applied, you may feel a small amount of stinging but this is not dangerous and will go away quickly if you experience it at all- some people do not. It is a vegetable-based dye and is generally considered safe for the eye area. The dye normally stays on the lashes for about ten minutes. The effects last for about a month.

Eyelash tinting is a great way to get the look of darker, glossier lashes without putting forth any effort on a daily basis. Many people become converted after getting it done just once thanks to the convenience of not having to apply mascara every day. It is also a great choice for summertime if you plan to spend a lot of time swimming or at the beach and you want dark, pretty lashes with no smudging.

If you are mainly looking to increase the thickness of your lashes, not just darkening the color, you may want to look into eyelash extensions. Lash extensions are another great option for eliminating the need to wear mascara on a daily basis. Read a more extensive rundown of eyelash extensions – how they work, what to expect, and how to care for them so they last as long as possible.

Guerlain Mascaras – The Rundown…

Among the most popular products offered by Guerlain is their mascara. All of their mascara is well-formulated and features some of the most sleek and appealing packaging to be found on any mascara anywhere. The most coveted of all the Guerlain mascaras is the new Le 2 de Guerlain.

Le 2 de Guerlain is an innovative mascara that features two wands. There is a rubbery thick wand designed for applying mascara all over your top lashes and a smaller wand that helps you to fine tune the bottom lashes and lashes in the inner and outer corners of your eyes. The smaller wand also works well for applying a second coat on your top lashes. It does take longer to dry than your average mascara but it definitely delivers on its promise of long, thick lashes. It holds a curl well but can be a bit clumpy without proper combing. It is also available in several colors that go beyond the typical black and brown mascara shades such as deep blue and shimmery purple. It stays in place very well which means it can be tricky to remove. An eye makeup remover that is formulated for waterproof makeup is a must if you want to get all of this off of your lashes.

Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara helps create the illusion of thicker lashes. In fact, it can be so thickening that an eyelash comb is a must-have when using this product. It does a great job of thickening but not enough to make it stand apart from other thickening mascaras on the market. The formula is also a bit on the dry side. After a few weeks of use, the remaining product tends to dry out rather quickly so it’s important to keep the cap tightly closed if you tend to go through mascara slowly.

Divinora is one of Guerlain’s most popular mascaras and although it has been recently discontinued, it is still relatively easy to find and has obtained a cult status. This mascara will not give you dramatic eyelashes that will leave people wondering if they are fake. However, it is perfect for every day, office, or outdoor wear. It makes your lashes look full and separated without looking obvious that you are wearing mascara.

Guerlain has something to offer everyone with their mascara selection. Whether your lashes are too short, too thin, or not defined enough for your liking, you will be able to find a mascara from Guerlain that can improve the appearance of your lashes.

A Beginner’s Overview of MAC Eyeliners

No matter what type of eyeliner you prefer, you can probably find the perfect formula and color somewhere in MAC’s extensive eyeliner range. From traditional liner pencils to kohl pencils, liquid liners, and gels, no one can walk away from a MAC counter and honestly say they couldn’t find a liner they liked.

Pencil wearers can choose from traditional Pencil Liners, soft Eye Kohl pencils and their more intense cousins the Kohl Power Eye Pencils, the mechanical pencil-style Technakohl Liner, and the long lasting cult favorite Powerpoint Eye Pencils. The Powerpoints are absolutely budge-proof. Permaplum is a very rich metallic purple that is dark enough to look natural. It also has a pink shimmer but don’t be put off by that. It’s not noticeable but instead has the effect of making the liner look multi-dimensional.

For those who never have any luck with pencils, there are a number of liquid options. Liquid Eye Liner is a standard liquid liner whereas Penultimate Eye Liner is a liquid liner with a pen tip. MAC’s Liquidlast Liner is a very long-wearing liquid liner with a brush applicator that stays on even through a day at the beach or after some serious crying. Not only does it not run, it also doesn’t flake, which is pretty impressive for a liquid liner. In fact, when it’s time to remove it, plan on expending an extra effort with a waterproof eye makeup remover. It comes in a lot of fun colors that can be hard to find in liquid liners, such as the teal-colored Aqualine.

MAC Fluidline
Creative Commons License photo credit: ookikioo

Fluidlines are the best of both worlds. They are gel liners that look soft and smooth like a pencil but without the hassle of sharpening. The Fluidlines do not smudge and come in cute little glass pots. You have a lot of control over the application because you can use whatever brush you want depending on the desired outcome. Blitz & Glitz is a classic black with a golden pearl twist. It seems almost impossible to go through an entire pot, but be sure to cap the lid tightly to avoid drying out the gel.

With so many great options, the only problem you will have when buying a MAC Eyeliner is narrowing down your selection!

Basic Tips for a Natural Eye Makeup Look

A natural eye makeup look is an important one to master. Many occasions call for subtle or natural looking makeup, from conservative business settings to an early morning dentist appointment. You want to look put together but don’t want it to be too obvious you are wearing makeup. Here are a few tips for giving your eyes some definition without looking like you tried too hard.

-Start with a base to neutralize any redness you may have in the eye area and to help your color last all day without creasing. Eye makeup products like MAC Bare Canvas Paint or Too Faced Shadow Insurance are perfect for prepping your lid for a neutral look.

-Swipe a soft neutral shade all over the lid. You can go with a beige, peach, or bone color depending on your skin tone. Matte shades or slightly shimmery ones such as MAC Grain are ideal choices.

-Apply a taupe or brown color in your crease using a rounded crease brush. Avoid red-based browns. A color like MAC Satin Taupe is flattering to most skin tones. After applying, use a blending brush to blend as much as possible so the color fades gradually.

-Use a pencil eye liner in a medium brown color. A soft pencil in a color similar to your lashes like Urban Decay Bourbon or MAC Teddy Eye Kohl gives you the most natural look. A gel liner like the soft shimmery brown MAC Ostentatious applied with a light hand can also look pretty and natural. Liquid liners should be avoided altogether.

-Curl your lashes and then apply one coat of mascara to the upper lashes only. Go with a brown mascara or dark brown if your hair is very dark. Black can look too harsh for natural makeup looks.

-Be sure to fill in your brows. This is an essential step for making your face look complete. Use a powder or soft pencil in a shade that is just slightly lighter than your natural brow color. Follow your natural arch and fill in the brows, being sure to blend well.

-A brow highlighter helps round out your look. A neutral shadow such as MAC Vanilla applied to the brow bone just under the brows adds a little highlight/definition without adding color.

It is very easy to get a natural eye makeup look with the right makeup products and a little bit of practice. After a few tries, achieving this look will become just as effortless as it appears!

How to Apply Eyeshadow

[See the rest of our How to Apply Makeup series for beginners.]

Eyeshadow is a great way to emphasize your eyes and create some really pretty looks. Most shadows come in powder format in little pots without any instructions. With so many different colors and brushes, it can be difficult to know where to start when applying eyeshadow. Since this “how-to” is part of our beginner’s How to Apply Makeup series, this is a basic routine for an everyday eyeshadow look. We have instructions on more advanced looks on our eye makeup page.

1. You will need a minimum of three colors to achieve a pretty eyeshadow look. Choose three shades in the same color family: one very sheer, one with a medium tone, and one dark color.

MAC Neutrals
Creative Commons License photo credit: Jacklyn DL

2. Begin with the sheer shade. This will be used as a wash over the entire eyelid. Neutrals are best for this purpose. Sweep the color over the entire eyelid all the way to your brows using a flat eyeshadow brush.

3. Next use the medium shade. Apply it only to the lid using a tapered brush and stop when you reach the crease. This color should fill the space between your lash line and the crease.

4. Finally, use the darkest color. This color should be applied sparingly. Remember, you can always add more but if you start out with too much, your look will be ruined. Using an angled brush, apply this color into the crease and then extend it slightly past the outer corner of your eye using a light sweeping motion.

5. Blend, blend, and blend some more. This is the most important step to achieving a natural look. Use a big, soft blending brush and brush in an outward motion from the inside corner toward the outside corner of each eye.

6. To tie the whole look together, you can take the darkest color and use it to line your lower lash line. A wet eyeliner brush can transform dark eyeshadow into a great eyeliner.

Eyelash Extensions – What to Expect

Eyelash extensions are a great way to get a glamorous eyelash look with little effort. Similar in theory to hair extensions, eyelash extensions are synthetic fibers that are attached to your existing lashes to make them look longer and fuller. This eliminates the very time-consuming step of curling your eyelashes and applying mascara every morning. Your eye makeup routine is reduced to just eyeshadow and liner – and all in all, you may not even need eyeliner at all. You can simply wake up looking beautiful. Lash extensions are a great idea for summer, beach vacations, cruises, or any situation where you want to look beautiful without having to worry about your mascara washing off. If you’re considering going in for your first appointment, here’s a little info on what to expect.

When you go to a salon to have professional eyelash extensions put on, expect to spend around an hour there. Normally your eyes will be gently taped closed while the aesthetician does her work. She will look for your shortest lashes and apply the extensions to those because they have the most room to grow and will help your extensions last longer in between visits. As human eyelashes have a very short life cycle of around 90 days, it is normal for lashes to occasionally fall off, including the ones where extensions have been applied. For this reason, touchups are recommended every few weeks with a complete re-do needed about every two or three months.

The World Through My Eye(s)

The process of applying eyelash extensions is painless and once they are in place, they will feel very natural. In order to extend the life of your eyelash extensions, it is best to avoid waterproof eye makeup, oily eye makeup removers and creams, and avoid steaming your face. For the first few hours you should not get the extensions wet as the glue may take some time to dry completely. Some technicians will recommend keeping them dry for a full 24 hours. After that, you can swim and shower as usual without causing any problems for the extensions. You will also be instructed not to curl your lashes but this is not a problem because you can elect to have extensions with a curl applied. In fact, there are many different lash extension options to choose from in varying lengths, curls, thicknesses, and even colors so you can get the exact look that you desire. It is okay to wear a non-waterproof mascara on top of eyelash extensions but most people find that it is not necessary. Many women also get their eyelashes tinted to help keep the roots of their lashes dark to complete their look.

If you are looking to streamline your eye makeup routine and give your eyelashes a fuller and longer appearance, eyelash extensions are an easy way to accomplish your goal. It gives you the same effect as false lashes but only needs to be applied once every few months. Depending on which style of lashes you get, the result can be so natural that no one will guess that your lashes have been enhanced.

An Overview of Anna Sui Eyeliners

Apr 04 2010 | Categories: Anna Sui Cosmetics, Anna Sui Eye Liners, Eye Makeup

In keeping with the style of Anna Sui’s fashion designs, her cosmetics line features eyeliners that come in many bright and fun shades. Her liners are definitely pleasing to the eye and have received praise from the likes of Kevyn Aucoin and Oprah. But do they live up to the hype?

The Kohl eyeliner gets points for its cute packaging. It is a chunky style pencil with an adorable flower motif on the cap. The application is fairly smooth but being a chubby-style liner it is difficult to get a precise line. It is much better suited to creating blended liner looks. Unfortunately it smudges after only a few hours. However, it is very creamy and the lighter colors such as the light green 902 and the pink 301 could also be worn smudged all over the lid as an eye shadow.

The liquid eyeliner performs much better than the pencil liner. It comes in a small bottle with a brush tip. It lasts fairly long as far as liquid liners go but it is not waterproof. This means it’s not difficult to remove at the end of the day and doesn’t require harsh eye makeup removers. It also means that a few tears make this liner start to ball up and come off in little flakes. You can get a lot of use out of one bottle, but after a few months the brush tends to fray although trimming with scissors solves the problem nicely. It also has a lovely rose scent.

The bottom line is that when it comes to eye makeup products, these liners are good, but nothing special. They have a high price tag but don’t really perform quite as well as other liners in their price range. However, if you are seeking fun colors and cute packaging, you may very well find them to be worth it. But if you are looking for staying power and a good value, you might want to pass. :)
